“I told a guy at the bank that someday I was going to get into real estate. He said, ‘What’s wrong with today?’” Goodwin recalled his colleague saying. “I said, ‘How do you do that?’”

At JBGoodwin Realtors, employees say training and mentorship are unmatched

Kara Carlson, Austin American-Statesman

Andrew Medina had never worked in real estate until he became a real estate agent about 18 months ago.

He previously worked in retail, but he said he'd always had a desire to be an entrepreneur, and real estate caught his eye.

But with a fast-paced industry like real estate in a booming city like Austin, that meant he had a lot to learn. Medina said with a lot of real estate brokerages, agents might get minimal training and then be “thrown to the wolves."

It all starts at the top.

Managers make or break workplaces, says Alex Charfen, CEO of the Austin-based Charfen Institute. Talented leaders motivate, are approachable, offer opportunities for advancement and provide routine feedback. Not–so–skilled bosses often micromanage, rule by fear and spend most of the day locked in their offices, unavailable.

"Morale craters because people don't know what's going on, how to make things better, or what their role is," said Charfen, whose company provides business leadership coaching around the globe. "Human beings, by their nature, want to perform. They want to succeed. They want to be recognized."

The surveys were conducted by our partner in this project, WorkplaceDynamics LLP,…
