With Lake Austin running through the city, and Lake Travis only half an hour west of downtown, Austinites are privileged with several hundred miles of easily accessible waterfront. Naturally, home owners have flocked to the banks of Lake Austin and Lake Travis, making Austin lakefront property in constant demand.

Let's take a look at some of the most prestigious communities for Austin waterfront homes.

Vineyard Bay

Vineyard Bay is easily one of Austin's premier waterfront neighborhoods. This gated community is located east of the Hurst Creek Arm of Lake Travis, only 3 miles north of Lakeway. Entering Vineyard Bay, you're greeted with ornate iron gates, stone walls, and cobblestone roads that open up into a beautiful neighborhood of many of Austin's most impressive waterfront mansions. These architectural masterpieces speckle the heavily treed hillside—sitting on multi-acre properties that offer stunning sunset views of Lake Travis.

Vineyard Bay is made up of only about 90 custom homes, many of which have their own private boathouses fit to store luxury yachts. Those that aren't lucky enough to own their own boathouse have access to the community's first-rate waterside amenities, which—in addition to a private marina—include a fitness center, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a private pool overlooking Lake Travis.

Lakeshore Addition

Along the west banks of Lake Austin, you'll find an incredible array of waterfront luxury homes. The most notable stretch of homes sit along Westlake Drive, in a subdivision known as Lakeshore Addition. This strip of properties along Lake Austin offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional estates that are designed to impress.

While Lakeshore estates vary widely from one to the next, as construction in the area has spanned over four decades, there are a few common themes among these homes. Nearly every Lakeshore home offers impressive outdoor living spaces that are designed to take advantage of the magnificent views of Lake Austin. From lakeside pools, to covered boat slips, to expansive courtyards, you may not find yourself spending much time indoors. If you do make it inside, many Lakeshore homes offer gourmet kitchens, private wine cellars, and other hidden surprises.

Mount Bonnell Shores

Across from Lakeshore Addition, on the east side of Lake Austin, you'll find the community of Mount Bonnell Shores. This neighborhood is made up of two gated communities: Waters Edge and the Island at Mount Bonnell Shores. Waters Edge features six unique-looking clusters of homes, split into coves, allowing each home to have waterfront access. As a result, most of these homes feature covered boat slips, waterside pools, and stunning outdoor living spaces.

The Island at Mount Bonnell Shores is separated from the mainland by a canal, which, similarly to Waters Edge, provides each home in the community with its own private waterfront access. As some of the most prestigious homes in the city, lakeside homes in Mount Bonnell Shores rarely become available, and start at over $3 million.
